Prayers and Mass celebrations for the peaceful repose of Mons. Robert Camilleri OFM will take place over all the diocese of Comayagua and other dioceses in Honduras. The funerary Mass will be celebrated on Thursday 19th<\/sup> October 2023 at 2:00pm in Comayagua, Honduras<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mons. Robert Camilleri OFM, born in \u0126amrun, Malta, on 24th<\/sup> April 1951, died in Comayagua, Honduras, on Tuesday 17th<\/sup> October 2023. He had been serving the Church of Comayagua as bishop since On 21st<\/sup> May 2004. Mons. Robert died from a heart attack in his episcopal residence at 9:00am. He was later sent to hospital where he was declared dead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Patrick Camilleri entered the Franciscan Novitiate at the age of 16, on 20th<\/sup> October 1967, and was given the religious name of Robert. He made his first Temporary Profession on 1st<\/sup> November 1968 and his Solemn Profession on 8th<\/sup> December 1972. He studied philosophy and theology in Malta, in the Franciscan Seminary at Rabat, but completed the theological studies in the International Seminary at St Saviour Convent, in the Custody of the Holy Land. On 29th<\/sup> June 1975 he was ordained presbyter by Pope Saint Paul VI at St Peter\u2019s Square, Rome, on the occasion of the Anno Santo<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Back to Malta, Br Robert was sent to St Anthony\u2019s Convent, G\u0127ajnsielem, Gozo, as a Formator to Novices, where he kept this ministry till 1979. That year, on his desire to go to the missions, he went to Honduras, in Central America, where he remained for the rest of his life and where he worked together with other Maltese Franciscan missionaries. For several years he was a parish priest at St Ann in Libertad, Comayagua, and from 1992 he ministered in Tegucigalpa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On 26th<\/sup> July 2001 Br Roberto, as he used to write his name, was nominated by Pope St John Paul II as Auxiliary Bishop of Tegucigalpa and Titular Bishop of Vagada. He was consecrated Bishop on 15th<\/sup> August 2001. On 21st<\/sup> May 2004 he was nominated Bishop of Comayagua, Honduras and on 7th<\/sup> June 2022 Monsignor Robert was chosen to be the President of the Episcopal Conference of Honduras.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
