Br. Ramon Farrugia OFM – New Minister Provincial

Br. Ramon Farrugia was born in Żabbar, Malta, on 26 April 1986, son of Raymond
and Ines née Buttigieg.
He entered the Franciscan Order of Friars Minor as a Novice at San Damiano in
Assisi on 8 September 2010 and made his Temporary Profession on 5
September 2011.
On 7 September 2015 he made his Solemn Profession.
He studied Philosophy and Theology at the Pontificia Università Antonianum in
Rome, while residing in the formation house of the Immaculate Conception
Province and in the friary of San Gregorio Settimo in Rome.
He was ordained Deacon by Archbishop Charles Scicluna on 28 October 2016.
The same Archbishop Scicluna ordained him Priest on 30 June 2017.
As a priest Ramon Farrugia ministered in the Franciscan churches of Rabat and
Valletta.
He was Provincial Secretary from 2017 to 2023, Provincial Definitor and
Economo from 2020 to 2026. During the same period he has been Guardian of
the Valletta fraternity, Rector of the Church of Santa Marija ta’ Ġesù, Chaplain
of St. Ursola Monastery (2020-2023), Spiritual Assistant of the
Archconfraternity of the Holy Crucifix in the same Franciscan church and was
appointed as member of the “Kummissjoni Patrimonju Kulturali Kattoliku”
(KPKK), the Catholic Cultural Heritage Commission of the Archdiocese of
Malta.
During his years of office as Guardian in Valletta he undertook the task of a
thorough restoration of the church and friary buildings, as well as of a great
number of works of art present in the same church and friary.
He has also been instrumental in organizing the pastoral activity of the
Franciscan church in order to open it for liturgical and pastoral services of other
Christian communities in Malta, and for this reason he welcomed in the
Franciscan friary the presence of three Franciscan brothers coming from India,
Pakistan and the Philippines.
Ramon Farrugia has been elected Minister Provincial of the Maltese OFM
Province of Saint Paul the Apostle for the period 2026-2032. He is 40 years old.
